If its anything like the mallory unit it needs more that a tach adapter. As Dave says dont bother its more trouble than it worth.

Well i tried it wired up the other way and no luck, didnt even try to spark.

Removed the MSD and blaser coil, reinstated the original setup and it fired first time. A big relief as i was worried i had fried something expensive.

So not sure why it doesnt run with the MSD. Either the first time wired up i damaged it somehow, or there isnt enough signal for the ECU to read that the fuel should be triggered.

The engine was still running a bit lumpy, but then i found the no.2 injector plug had the tiny crimp terminal pushed out of its place. So now ive got 8 happy cylinders but no msd!

I thought MSD was a good upgrade to give better spark at high rpms? Is the general consensus that it isnt worth it?

My view is if a simple ignition mod could give benefits - why didn't the factory do it? Different with a tuned engine with a higher rev range, etc.

I'm pretty sure you use the green and violet wires to connect to a magnetic pick up dissy, white wire if its optical trigger or points. You can throw the Lucas amplifier in the bin and use the MSD6A CDI box as the amp.

To use this you will need to buy a MSD tach adapotor. The ECU will not pick up the signal from the MSD without it. If you are using the magnetic pick-up input (green and violet wires) to trigger your MSD Ignition, you will need the PN 8920 Tach Adapter.

Lots of info about putting and MSD6A into a Disco on the MSD Tec Support Forum. If you go to MSD website their are multiple PDF installation instruction wiring diagrams for a host of scenarios for different US, Euro and Jap ignition systems.

I also threw the Lucas dissy in the bin and swapped in a Performance Ignition Services' Scorcher distributor which has a custom advance curve and uses commonly available GM/Ford Bosch parts.

Result is a smoother engine with more torque. It's a common modification to Discoveries here where the Lucas set tends to break down in the heat.

Now you know what MSD stands for - My Spark Died.

As dave said, they are not nessesary on many engines - are you running high revs, nitrous, boost or LPG?

Both Tony and I had problems with the Mallory unit. Told it would work by Century Performance but could not find one person that had it running successfully. Then they came out with something called eztrigger which take the feed from the original king lead generates an output to the ignition unit.

This is how Tony’s was eventually setup in order to get it running. I just changed to Emerald and the Mallory is now collecting dust in my loft

Basically a standard engine, but its going to be used for drifting so at the red line for lots of the time.
