3.9 Rover v8 HOTWIRE no spark

Post by n1tr0_9 »

Ive just fitted a Range Rover Classic 3.9 Hotwire engine with injection to a rover sd1.

I haven't got a spark. If i connect my multimeter to the positive terminal on the coil i have 11.9V with the ignition on. It falls to 8.6V while cranking. If i put a spark plug in the king lead coming from the coil and rest it on the engine i get no spark.

Should the voltage fall to 8.6v or is this too low?

Any checks i can do?

Thanks

OK, its running now, but im still not sure why.

I had a spare dizzy with another type of ig amp on the side, so i swapped them over. I put the spark plug in the king lead an rested it ontop of the engine. Cranked it over, and no spark. Just for the hell of it i plugged the king lead into the dizzy and cranked it, expecting nothing and it started instantly! So im well happy, but confused.

When I had this DLM dizzy on my SD1, I carried a spare amp. It gets too hot. Think it was here I read that in some hot countries there was a kit produced to move it to a cooler place.

On the later discoveries they moved it to the same place as the coil with a big metal heatsink, and used a jumper lead to connect it to the dizzy, idea being the the airflow over the front kept it cool

OK, got a new problem now. I just fitted a MSD 6A ignition system with Blaster 2 coil. Wired it up as per the instructions, but i get nothing again. I dont know if ive wired it up wrong or if its the unit as its second hand.

Anyone got experience with MSD units?

You can test the MSD by shorting the white wire to earth momentarily.

You should get a spark at the king lead if the MSD is ok and wired correctly.

I assume you have the black and orange wire to the coil and nothing else.

Ive got the orange wire going to the coil, then another wire onto the +ve feed to the dizzy.

The orange wire should not go to the dizzy. It's got 380volts on it and may now have blown the dizzy amp ?????.
Nothing should go to the coil except the black and the orange wires. The dizzy amp should have 12v from the ignition switch and the spade nearest the end of the module should be connected to the white wire as you seem to have already.

The signal for the injection and tach should come from the white wire and you may need a tach adapter to get sufficient signal to drive them.

Just to add, you should get it running again without the MSD just to see if you have done any damage to the Dizzy or ecu or tachometer.

Yes. But you may need a MSD tach adapter to get sufficient signal to drive the injection and tachometer.
However, there should be a tach out terminal on the MSD box???

I would ask why you're bothering. The DLM 8 when working correctly produces a more than adequate spark for a standard RV8. :D
