3.9 Torque Converter on 3.5 Engine Help!!!!

Post by Crazy »

Hey guys,

I have a 3.5L RV8 from an SD1 and a ZF 4HP22 gearbox from a Volvo with the torque converter from a 3.9L RV8 ZF 4HP22 (off a Discovery) and found that the flexiplate and crank locator don't match up to the torque converter.

Is there any way of making a 3.9L RV8 TC work with a 3.5L RV8 engine?

I have the flexiplates for both 3.5 and 3.9 engines / TCs, but can't see a way of getting the 3.9 TC to work on the 3.5 engine.

I found this image on here
Image

And I have the 6 bolt bit for the crank but it's only a 6 bolt bit, not got the 4 bolts like it shows on the image, but I have everything else shown here (other than the little 4 bolt hole thing at the very left of the image.

I need help here massively!! Cheers!!

I've got the full set up available, barring 2 of the 4 long bolts

The 3.5 and 3.9 crankshafts are identical at the flywheel end. You are definitely missing some bits.

Pile them up with the leftmost part at the bottom.

Ahh, that's cool. Cheers. I'm missing the bit on the left and the bit on the right of that and the bolts for it too.

Anyone have any going spare?

I've spoken to a local Land Rover place, and they're gonna have a look for me in the morning, see what they've got. Hopefully they have the bits I need :) Fingers crossed.

Okay, I've got the bits, but the middle bit (the big spacer thingy with the TC nose locator bit on it) doesn't fit in the engine side of things properly, the shaft that looks to go in the middle is about 4mm too wide :(

Were there different sizes on those shaft bits of them, or is there something weird going on with my engine, or should I just machine that shaft down so that it fits?

Cheers guys

NO!, you've got a manual crankshaft which has the spigot bush in the middle.

Remove the spigot bush, (search the forum for various techniques!), then it will all fit together.

Just find a piece of bar the size of the spigot hole and pack the hole fully with grease and whack the bar into the hole. The grease will push the spigot out. Once it's moved a bit, repack the hole and whack again.

Job done. Cut through with a hacksaw blade and then used a slide hammer. All assembled now, just gotta connect up with the tc n gearbox now which will be fun!!
