Will this flywheel take a 10.5" clutch?

Post by Speed 8 »

Hi Lads,

Quick question; I was wondering if the flywheel I bought for my new build could take a 10.5" clutch? The McLeod one RealSteel sell for example. The flywheel is a TVR "Ultra Light" (9kg).

Hello
I should think that you could go down that route.
I have a 10.5 clutch on a custom ali flywheel made out in the states and it works just fine.
cheers

Thanks for the reply Paul.

A couple of questions if you don't mind. ;-)

What kind of engine are you running?
What is the weight of your custom flywheel and what kind of clutch are you running?

Hi
My clutch is a twin plate Mcleod unit and this is all mounted to a 4.3 RV8
Twin plate for nitrous use.
The weight I do not know but I can tell you that it is just 1mm bigger than a Rv8 ring gear.
I would estimate that my flywheel is in the 10/17lbs area.A normal cast lightweight flywheel weighs in at around 27lbs as far as I can remember
Real Steel have said that this unit would rev to 8000rpm but I will be going nowhere near that kind of rpm.
Hope this helps
Cheers

Sorry but talking pooh.
Have checked my book of specs and did weigh flywheel....
With ring gear 11lbs..
Total weight inc clutch 35lbs..
That should help you?
Cheers

Thanks for the reply Paul.

Helped a lot, I'm always eager to collect intel. ;-)

With my new 5.0 build I'm aiming at around 300bhp and as much torque as I can get. That is on normal aspiration and not using nitrous. A 10.5" single plate will probably do the job fine, especially as the car only weights around 700kgs.

5.0 in a Westfield.
You going to have a road going version of an ICBM and I love it.
Loved the pictures and your willingness to actually get out there and drive the beast.
Very good luck with your new build and if I can help you at all then please do ask.
Regards
Paul

You're not the first one to draw that conclusion.

What can I say, my current setup is pretty predictable, and sure there is oversteer if you want to, but it's very "manageable". Sure with the 5.0 there will be some added trickiness but I'm not too worried by it. It's been done before. I've seen one en real life and know for sure there is another one out there.

With the installation of the 5.0 the car will be completely rebuild. The chassis will be reinforced around the engine bay and diff area. Besides that shocks, brakes and rear tire width will be upgraded. The whole project has a multiyear timeline though.

I may be new on here but I've already come to the conclusion you must be mad  , or maybe I'm just jealous 8) !

Most of my mates think I'm mad driving a 1967 Land Rover on leaf springs with drum brakes at 105mph on a runway, wait until I show them your little project  !
