GRANADA REAR HUBS

Post by Ian Anderson »

On the Gt we utilise Granada rear hubs / bearing carriers

Last week the car felt like it was steering from the rear over ripples in the road and wandering a bit in the lane

Yesterday I borrowed the right size socket and took the offending wheel off (Right / drivers side) Put the socket on and it turned about 3/4 turn before starting to pinch up.

Now on the GT40s forum someone said the official torque spec is 270 - 29 Nm. And I don't have a torque wrench that goes that big!

So I stuck my extendable wheel nut spanner on it and with handle extended it comes to about 18 - 20 inches I "gave it some" and managed to move the spring enough that the chassis started to lift / rock on the axle stand

I then thought better check the other side and it turned perhaps 1/8 turn before pinching up and again got the "give it" treatment

Both nuts did up with the top of the nut moving forward - same rotation as driving so there is a left and right thread here!

Question - would my "give it" equate somewhere close to 270Nm? And are the hubs on the correct sides? Perhaps not I don't know! Also what could have caused these to come loose as the nuts are nylok type stuff as fitted OEM - perhaps I just did not eat enough porridge in the morning.

Any assistance / advice appreciated

Thanks
Ian

Assuming it's got two opposing taper roller bearings, then maybe they weren't pushed fully home when the hub was assembled.
Under those circumstances, they could move, thus slackening off the bearing and giving the impression that the nut had moved (when it hadn't!)

Chris

Perhaps but the wandering started over the last month and the car has done 4500 miles since assembly sowhy? Surely it would have shown up in the first 500 miles and again when rear alignment was redone after settling in period (about1000 miles)?

But then this last year I have done more hard starts and faster runs (Santa pod and Dunsfold at about 140mph)

Now if the nut has inertia and I do a wheelspin start the nut would tend to undo. Surely inertia onthis would not be enough to "crack" the nut

Loads still to lear on this stuff

Ian, are the nuts castellated? If not why not drill and lock wire them..

There should be no significant load to undo the nut, unless the bearings are seizing and you drive backwards a lot!!
