auto to manual conversion 3.5 rover

Post by mickjo »

Want to convert a 3.5 rover from auto to manual lt77 type 19A gearbox. I've got the box, bellhousing, fork, etc. I need an SD1 clutch kit but from what I've read I take it I need the flywheel and driveplate, what is the spigot that I've read cant see it on Rimmer bros listings, and how easy is it to fit. Is there anything else I need.

regards

Mick

The clutch kit should have a clutch plate, pressure plate (cover) and release bearing, so you will need to buy the flywheel separately. The drive plate is (I think) the flex plate which is part of the auto setup so not required.

The spigot is a bearing that goes in the end of the crankshaft to locate and centre the input shaft. If you look at the splined shaft on the gearbox you will see a smooth section at the tip that is smaller in diameter, that is where the spigot runs on.

I take it you have all the gubbins to fit the pedals and hydraulics to the car for actuating the clutch. You will need to get rid of the single bigger brake pedal and then fit the clutch pedal and smaller brake pedal, the master cylinder, piping and slave cylinder. You will need to wire up the reverse light and may need to change the speedo drive to ensure correct calibration or the fuzz will have you for speeding if it's too high.

If you have a P6 the the pedals are in a "box" that bolts in/out as a unit making life a bit easier. I am not sure of the SD1.

Your right I'm going to need the speedo changing been given a name who can recalibrate the clock.
Finally got the parts I need from Robsport very helpful indeed. All going well till I looked into what I thought was the better of 2 gearboxes I had and found it wont go into any gears at all, which is a shame as it was a 3.5 VDP box. The other one is a 2.6 box, which seems to work beautifully through the gears at least in the garage anyway. Will see how it goes when its in the car, not sure what the ratio difference is between the 2.6 and the 3.5 other than the mechanical speed cog.
Didn't really explain the details of the car project earlier, I'm converting my manual triumph stag to rover power. Monarch stags very informative and helpful for the parts required. So should be ok, however if I new how much this was all going to cost I would've repaired the stag engine.

Mick,
If I were you I would look at a rebuild of that box before it goes in the car. They have a weakness in the main input bearing and you will save yourself a lot of hassles doing it now. I fitted an LT77 to my car for about a year and it spat it's guts out resulting in another box change for me.

unstable,
I know exactly what your saying but funds are very tight, the costs are going to be about £2500 as it stands, and best part of £500 for a rebuild is going to be totally out of the question at the moment. I've got three boxes and picked the best of the bunch, I'll put some good quality synthetic oil as described in other threads. I accept its a fingers crossed moment.
What I plan on doing is taking the spare 3.5 VDP gearbox and get that overhauled at the end of the year, and swap it over next year.
