Bottom pulley crank bolt.

Post by ihatesissycars »

How do you guys get yer bottom puley bolt done up so tight?

I had to get a big breaker bar, stick the car in 5th, handbrake on full, brakes on full, chock the wheels up and then go for it! I haven't found a torque wrench that goes up that high so i just go for it until i can't do it up any more. Even then i'm not sure its enough.

I want to get it right as my woodruff key (i've had to modify the later 60mm one to fit my early crank) isn't something i'd trust to take alot of load ref driving the pulley and associated components, oil pump and cam/valve gear. I'm gussing this is why its done up so tight to take the load of the key via the high clamping force?

I take the sump off and stick a piece of wood between the crank and block.
Works well for me.

I have a 150 lbft rated air impact wrench that works very well against the inertia of the engine internals - no need for wedging the crank or flywheel. Doing the bolt up again I use a suitable torque wrench and a drive flange holding tool in two of the holes through the pulley.

So I take it the bolts not lefthand thread then. Spent ages trying to loosen one off a spare engine I just bought, whilst it was sat on the floor. Need a bigger bar !!

big bar push it in pulses until it cracks thats what i do

get the socket to sit secure then pulse soft to kin hard then back off keep doing that until it cracks off

take the bolt off then wiggle the pulley off left to right and it'll come a bit of wd40 helps the pulley come off too
