BELT SQUEAL

Post by Kev »

Anyone got a fix for a squealing serpentine belt. I've tried belt dressing and WD40 but the only thing that works is talcum powder  and this wears off in a few hours.

The belt on my engine is a short one only driving the water pump and alternator, so no idler wheel and only need one tensioner which is tensioned correctly, (I think).

cheers
Kev

Change the belt or the tension. Guage the tension on the 'longest side' if you know what I mean.

WD40 will not improve the squeal, It will degrade the belt, and eventually cause the belt to fail, the squeal is caused by the belt slipping and any form of lubrication will not improve the situation, belt dressing designed for stopping slipping belts is the only answer in a can and is only a tempoary measure,
The only soloution open is replace the belt, degrease the pullys, and tension the belt correctly.

To retension the belt, slacken the central tensioner pulley bolt (13mm spanner) you should see the tension increase if slack. If no difference is seen replace the belt and set it up again. Retighten central bolt once complete

My serp set up has all the bits, air con, etc but still has only one tensioner

Also check the belt is from a reputable manufacturer. A lot of 'own brand' stuff comes from China today and the compounds can be marginal at best.

For the supplier if it gets past a year old then that's good enough. Even if you hadn't tried your own mix of belt dressing and tried to take it back they'd just say that you'd over tensioned it and it was therefore out of warranty!

Cheers,

Ian

serpentine belts will run a lot higher tension than a normal v belt so look for MAX 10 mm deflection
