Good and bad news

Post by ian.stewart »

Well I have finally got both heads off, and nothing really untowards has reared its ugly head, a few witness marks on the valves, but I have done a parafin test on the chambers and after 2 hours there has been no wet patches in the ports as yet, I will take the valves out and give them a clocking. I still think I will change the inlet valves, but they do seem to be a funny size at 1.69--1.70. or are they a common size??
The not so good news is the crank nose may be bent, I have just clocked the nose and it appears to be running out by about 0.004, I will have a better look tomorrow, there may be a smidgen of Loctite on the nose, as I have allways loctited the balancer in situ.
Ian :D

Managed to clear away 7 years of crap from the end of my garage and excavated my old 3.5, put it up on the engine stand so I could clock the crank nose, which proved to have a runout of less than 2 tenths, which makes the 4 thou on the other engine look positivly donkys hind legish, guess which crank is going back in my engine, plus the crank has new shells and mains, from memory, has only been started and mothballed,

I'm glad you're staying loyal to the rover ranks Ian! Did the magic cam survive the carnage?

I think so, I havent really dismantled THE engine, Heads off thats about it, just done some basic checks, but the cam turns over freely and really I do hope it has survived, even if it is damaged, all I need is a pair of matching lobes and a bearing journal and a cam doctor should be able to give me my dimensions/lobe seperation ETc so Newmans or Piper can grind me a new one

Ian
I do have a spare P5/6 crank damper if you want it. I'm off to USC at the pod tomorrow. I will be going down at dawns crack in case you want to meet me or pop into the Pod to collect it.
I'll be there from 7am to closing time. If you come over, just look for the black mgb.

Cheers mate, USC sounds good. but now I am torn between Ford Fair at Silverstone or the USC, there is even a bit of closed/invite only 1/8th mile drag racing about 2 minuites from me tomorrow, and I have bought a ticket for that, No car, no point really.

If you are going to the Pod I'll see you there. If you go to Silverstone you will be only a few mins away from my house.
I could leave it on the drive for you to collect. There is a shortcut to Silverstone from Buckingham town as well.

I'll email my details to you in case you are passing.

Cheers Perry, I have had a look at the pics, and now I am confused, My balancer has a belt Groove cut into the outer ring, I have allways assumed its a P5/6 pulley, Now I have my doubts

My pre SD1 pulley has the groove machined into the casting. This pulley was from a P5/6 on fleabay, but all the pulleys were bolted on. Maybe it was a modified engine.
Still yours if you want it mate.
