A Newbie needs some advise!

Post by 1967Mustang! »

Hi there!!
As I'm new to the V8 Owners Forum I would like to introduce myself...I consider myself an old fart of 71 but love V8's!!!
Being a committed petrol head I recently bought a 1975 MG BGT 3.9 that had been used on circuits. It has been totally stripped of all additional weight. Although I really cannot confirm if it really IS a 3.9 it does however have a Tremec T5 box, although I don't have any information on the clutch.
I recently bought an Edelbrock 500 carb, (sorry, I prefer carb's... please remember I'm an old fart...) I am in the process of returning the MG to be used on the street and will compete in speed events.
As an aside, I'm a MSUK marshal, and a trainee on the Westcountry Rescue team in the South West where we live.
I've competed before at speed events for ten years in a Sunbeam Lotus, so I'm no beginner...
I am however, a beginner with my knowledge on Rover V8's!!
We all love to have a load of power in a lightweight car, (yes, up to a point...) but I am really unsure how to progress.
Do I tune the 3.9 or go for a "top hat" 4.6? I will be using a traditional carb and dizzy setup, yes, I know I can get more power from injection etc.
With regards to costs, I know it really depends on how much power I want! So, to answer that, I would be more than happy with 250hp preferably at the wheels, but I'm a realist so it will be at the flywheel... :(
I know there are folk that have been where I am now, but I'm looking for guidance, and as I can't do the work myself perhaps a suggestion or two of a reliable engineering company in the South West? I live in East Devon.
To finish, I'm blessed with an understanding wife, who is the "brainy one" and is an MSUK Timekeeper, and loves V8's as much as I do, she also likes the old Rally drivers of the 80's, but perhaps we shouldn't go there!!!!!
Thanks for reading all this, and I'm sorry if I have waffled too much!!!

I can't offer any immediate advice (carbs are the devil's ECU), but I would like to see some pictures (of the car!) :)

All the engines I have done have been 4.6 bottom ends with top hat liners. They have been absolutely rock solid.

250BHP at the flywheel is doable, but you will need a fair bit of work to heads and a decent exhaust as well as carbs.

But the bottom end will definitely take it if you can persuade the top end to deliver it!

Presumably it is a running car at present ?

So why not just run it for a bit and see how it feels, and then decide what needs to change
