Rover 3.5 gremlin!

Post by Jono FD3 »

Hi guys, just a quick one to see if anyone can throw a suggestion to the cause of my problem!! Basically the engine was running fine, but started to miss and felt sluggish, then stopped! Initially I thought the coil was breaking down when it got hot, so I changed it to a good one... by then the engine was cold, after a bit of cranking it started, but I had to hold the throttle open a tad to keep her going, but again, once it was at running temp it was missing and backfiring, then died again! It's the later style SD1 setup with a standard 12v coil and ignition amp mounted on the inner wing (upgrade from stock, as per this forum).

throw some ideas at me guys! I haven't taken any plugs out or anything to investigate as yet as I was rushing to get her back on the trailer and home before it got dark!!

Cheers
Jono

But with it starting straight on the button when cold, then slowly getting worse as it worms up I was thinking electrical?! But I'll change the filter as its only a few quid just to try :)

My old 3.5 did this to me. I traced it eventually to a duff regulator on the alternator so it was putting out too many volts. This caused the ignition amp to fail in the manner you describe.

mmmm, shall check the battery voltage then..... I know the thing is a little temperamental, and the belt occasionally sequels like a pig!!
