Not sure????

Post by ian.stewart »

At the Pod at the weekend I was trying out a couple of ideas, the 1st was running without a bonnet, as a lot of the small fords seem to do, and without the airbox was the other, The car SOUNDED awsome, ran very well off the line, but my terminals were down by 7-8 mph,
as I did not expect the airbox to stay attached to the engine above 100mph, I did not risk running the airbox without the bonnet,
My question is, was it the lack of bonnet causing the loss of speed due to wind resistance or was it a lack of air going into my engine due to wind sheer over the TBs????

I would have said it was a bit of both Ian. There must be a shed load of turbulence over the top of the engine without the bonnet. When the bonnet is on, I would have thought you had two defined areas of airflow. One over the top of the bonnet and one through the grille to slightly pressurise the engine bay. When the bonnet is on you must get a much smoother flow of air into the induction without the 100 mph gale trying to blow in from above without the bonnet. That my tuppence worth anyway.
