Everyone - gear is installed!

Post by adamnreeves »

I ask the question first, in case you get bored with my dribble:

46D and R380 2WD manual box.

Looking at my Rover 3500 haynes manual which seems the best guide I have for the gearbox, bellhousing etc, it suggests for bellhousing to engine torque is 21 ft/lbs, seems a little low, usually 30 ft/lbs for bolts of this size. Should I use loctite 243 just to be certain.

I didn't realize until I started this just how tricky of an operation this is!! I tried doing on my own with an engine crane for company for about 50 mins and then thought this is not going to work. I then enlisted the help of my 17yr old son and 15yr old daughter! and the crane! In the end it seemed the best way was engine crane holding the back of the gearbox, me holding the middle and taking most of the weight, my son making sure the dowels were aligned whilst I lifted slight and pushed whilst my daugther wiggled the output shaft to make sure the splines engaged through the clutch. This took about 7 minutes!

Bolted it all up and measured torque to turn engine over whilst in gear (4th I think) with the plugs out, great news, it only took 23 ft/lbs!

Hi Adam,
Well done, you got there in the end .
25 30 ft/lbs will be plenty of torque for these bolts, no Loctite required, just use a spring washer

regards
Jim
