Any one using one of these- supposed to be better than the old Mallory Unilite optical type

Dunno. I had a Unilite and had problems with the cap on two occasions. So one of a different design could be better. But to be perfectly honest it was no better than a Lucas DLM, which you can get new for less.
If being able to set up your own advance curve is important, a mapped system is far better than any spring and weight one.
