alternator upgrade

Post by truckdoctor »

My rover p5b has charging problems and uses external voltage regulator etc, which internal regulated alternator will fit the v8 engine, thinking of Lucas 18 ACR but not sure of it's dimensions and whether it will fit.
OK with the wiring differences.
Thanks Steve

Do you mean currently you have a dynamo?

Was there ever an alternator fitted to the P5B?

Chris.

That unit is actually a very decent alternator. I had one on my early P6 3500. Later P6 used an all in one type which was nothing like as good. I assume later P5 did too.

To fit a later type would need wiring alterations. I'd be inclined to stick with what you have, and get it fixed. If its reg. has failed it can be fixed - it uses standard components.

Snag may be the position of the alternator on your engine. It's in a different place on my SD1 - I've fitted a modern 100 amp unit to mine.
Has your P5B got an ammeter? That would determine the maximum output you could use too.

I think that most Lucas alternators are interchangeable, so you might well just be able to fit the later one.

Anything can be made to fit - but there are lots of variables. The shaft size changed down the line. Took me some time to find the correct pulley for my later unit. I also had to make up spacers for both the pulley and mountings. And make a new tensioner.
But on the early one with external regulator the wiring needs a fair bit of alteration to fit an all in one unit. Not impossible, of course.
