the plot thickens, sent some pictures of the diff to a jag place, and they said its not a jag power lock diff, so i rang up the people who are doing the diff, they have found out its not a quaife or any american make, and not a tr7 . But they have found a company in birmingham which reckon it sounds like the one they make, so im just waiting to hear, fingers crossed :( rich

Rich,

Just twigged that the first pictures posted were not from you and I used those pics for identification

Hope you have some joy with this other contact, do I take it you just have the diff unit itself and no casing ie the axle itself?

Kevin.

Hi Kevin, yes all i have is the diff, no axle casing. No one has ever heard of a Lemax lsd, and thats all its got stamped name wise on it. The 1st lot of pictures up explains why you all thought it was a irs diff. Nothing i do is easy and straight forward,if only it was, life would be so much simpler. :( rich

Why's it knackered then Rich, is it just that the plates are getting worn out? If so you may be able to get them re-surfaced or use them as are but just get slightly more slip?

Are you sure thats not just someones view to get some business? I know in an ideal world you would fit new parts as soon as they get worn but if you are having trouble finding the bits then there may be litle wrong with them? Cant be worse than your current diff anyway

Just thinking maybe you should pop it in and take it out for a spin before spending more time and money on it?

Hi TC, the company i take my stuff to are really good, the last thing they need is more work. I might of found someone who can get the plates now, the plates in there were scored up naff looking anyway, and it would be a straight swap from a tr7 axle into a sd1 axle. So looking good for 2010. :) rich

I'll ask someone tomorrow Rich- they re-coated a BIG pair of centrifugal clutch shoes for me a while ago- but I think it may be a different ball game!

well ive found some friction plates that are the same shape but i cant find the size of them, from a datsun/nissan lsd. . At the moment ive got 3 companies looking into the plates, if they have no joy then it looks like they will be made, there is a company over road from me that can lazer cut them out. Any ideas on what the metal grade is for them?? :? rich

Medium to high carbon mild steel I would think. I would doubt they are made of anything fancy, they are a mass produced automotive product, also any process of bonding friction material to them, and the heat build up when you are turning a corner under power would negate any heat treatment so really no point in using fancy alloys
