ive been getting a de-bug mode message come up,but message still goes on forum. The only thing changed was the crown wheel and pinion, all the rest was v8 gear, had a chat with real steel when they raced the sd1, they changed to a quaife and used stronger shafts and ran 11s in it with no problems

That's a funny one Rich!
If you go to many MG forums for V8 conversions they will tell you to swap the Salisbury axle for an SD1 unit as they are stronger.??
But mine is running a stock V8 MGB axle with secondhand MGB 1800 half shafts as they are all the same.
My main failure was the small diff cogs. But this problem was solved when I welded the diff solid. But I would not like to drive mine on the road like this.
Maybe it's time to take the SD1 off the road and weld the mutha up??
It's a lot cheaper than buying a LSD unit mate

Pel, your fear of driving on the road with a welded up diff could be made worse by your huge sticky tyres? If that is the case then Rich wouldn't have as much of a problem I'd have thought..? Rich why not weld one up as a test, cant cost much and then you could see whether you wanted to permanently use it or not!
welding it up could be fun and cheaper , ive looked on some other sites ,and some people have said its ok on the road but abit bumpy on bends, but really bad in the wet with slide outs when your not expecting it, The spider gears get welded and thats what ive broke, its got 225 size tyres so not wide,

Rich,
Been following this because I have a narrowed SD1 axle in my MGB which was done because I had access to one for nothing, and needed the 3.08 ratio as with the LT77 box, first gear was unusable with the original 3.9/1 MGB axle and to buy a 3.07/1 CW/P for the B axle and fit it would have cost about £650.
Have you managed to find out how much torque the SD1 axle and shafts can handle? as I have heard of people twisting the shafts once they have been been narrowed which is not applicable in your case.
I'd still like to swap in a Jag IRS but that would cost around £1800.00 after reconditioning and narrowing, but they are cheap as chips to buy and can be had with an assortment of ratios and powerlock diffs and will take up to 600BHP

well ive spoke to quaife today and they said there diff will be fine for what i intend to do,the sd1 axle is ok just the diff parts are to weak for mine, but in a lighter car they should be ok.not sure about narrowed shafts being weaker and twisting, i suppose it depends on how they,ve been done, some places can respline them as opposed to welding, but im saving up and selling bits for the quaife £560 ouch
