Discovery 1 Drive shaft end float
Hi,
I'm struggling to get my head around the end float on the stub axle, if its out of spec what symptoms would it give me, LR state for the 0.08mm to 0.25mm i'm up at 0.35mm at present.
Would it give a whine at a given speed, by moving backwards and forwards inside the diff?

I can't think of 10 thou end float on a disco drive shaft making any difference in any way but I will probably be corrected by Chris very soon
I would associate a whine from a diff more likely being a worn out ball race, incorrect pinion mesh or planet wheels in the diff being too worn.

I think I agree with Mike!
But I suppose if it is a front shaft, then it would affect where the CV joint is sitting. Clearly the CV joint needs to turn on the same axis as the swivel housing. But that is on spines I think so it can float about anyway. I am sure it is on my Landie anyway.

A whiney diff is probably the pinion bearing / engagement with the crown wheel. Or as Mike says knackered bearings caused by off-roading and getting water in the axle.

If you can hear a gear whine you need to modify your exhaust to drown it out!

Have you thought it may be a tyre noise (including one delaminating)

Morning,
Thanks for the replies, spent the weekend rebuilding the front axle, all back in spec, still hasn't stopped the diff whining, even thou its a new locker, ring and pinion, tooth contact is in the middle where its should be.
Oil is Valvoline 75/90 Syn power, vented the front swivels, to stop one shot grease getting in the diff, next thing on this list is suppose will be a double cardon prop shaft from Bailey morris.
Its just strange the noise is around 40mph to 75mph a slight rubble / whine, but if you hit a dip in the road the pitch changes and lowers, gets me thing the transfer case and front diff get closer so the prop shaft has less stress for that given point.
I know the tranny case will whine, as its all those gears, and not chain driven, but i remove the from t prop its all silent, UJ's have been changed, and its still in phase, standard suspension no lift, my only thought is the splines on the propshaft and the angle its working at.
