How much more relative force does it take to get past the stickng point. I had this on my new engine. I checked and apparently is stiction which is normal. Turning my crank with everything connected up with gearbox in 4th and spark plugs out took 23 ft/lbs to get past the stiction which is not a lot I guess but when turning by hand a slight stiction can feel worse than it is.

My present engine that i completely rebuilt was fairly easy and consistant to turn over. With no plugs in you can get hold of the crank pulley and just about turn it by hand. So thats an example of that. I'd be concerned if it were difficult to turn in one particular part of the engines rotation.

Excuse for more upgrades in my book or at lest a complete freshen up?

Then it's down to the cam or shells.

Easy job to sort :) Stick in a stock cam and see if it turns.

Good point Ian, I assumed it was a running engine just with a cam change.

i think i have more of an idea as to what could be the problem. When i completed the cam swap i had to go out and leave the car before i had chance to test it i have just learnt that my brother came round and tried toi start the car to move it not knowing what i had done. he said it started first time but there was an almighty knocking noise so he stopped it then tried it again (cheers bro) this time the engine wouldnt turn. perhaps i had timing out and ive bent a valve or two does this sound likely to you guys

Had to edit wont let me post a reply will whip heads off then and check for damage

Quite possible if the cam timing were out.

Unfortunately if the cam timing significantly out then likely that the valves have hit the pistons. If you are lucky then it has jsut bent your valves and marked the piston tops. If you are unlucky then a valve has broken and embedded itself in the piston and caused bore damage also. I hope its the former, sorry.

Do check that the guides are straight too if this is the case. The ally around the guides distorts and the guide gets pushed over.

Which takes us neatly back to my post at the start: have you got a valve bent and fouling a piston top, easily discovered when you take each piston to TDC and try to push the valve down......

have just tested all valves at top dead centre on each cylinder and each one pushes down untill it hits top of piston and returns easily all seem to be sitting at same hieght and none seem loose ive even rotated engine till it gets stiff and pushed down on all valves and they all seem fine.

Blimey, that doesn't sound good. How can nothing be damaged if the valves are hitting the piston tops!?

Are all the anciliary items still fitted? Pas pump, water pump etc? Also, is the bottom pulley done up tight still? If you removed it that is.

the pulley and front cover are removed so i am really just turning the engine as for the valves im pushing on them manualy with rockers removed so they are not hitting on a revolution its just me pushing on them

To be honest i have my doubts about me getting the timing wrong when i fitted the cam as i was carefull that everything lined up and after a further conversation with my brother he said the car fired up instantly and other than the horric noise it actuatly ran fine for the few seconds it ran
