Hi guys, have been thinking about ignition maps - am currently running between 34-36 degrees of advance after 3000 rpm (under no load higher) in he main portion of the map- and it seems to run happily on regular fuel although I believe I can feel a difference on 99 octane;-) - so only use this- and when I take the Landy rallying or (as yet not) the drag strip - (cancelled there due to rain!!) I mix in a proportion of toluene and potasium lead replacemtn (i know its not needed! makes me feel better) to boost octane to prevent any detonation under NOS. I run a CR of just over 10:1. Now was honking if I could run a second map for the road when on ultra high octane - would I get any benefit of going beyond 34-36 degrees of advance?? What do most people run on very high octane fuel?? Any gains to be had?? Also have the standard for leads that came with my megajt EDIS module and thinking of upgrading?? Are expensive/magnecor leads worth the 100 quid for 8 (ford items - edis8) - or should I just buy bog standard - I know hey are of better quality in terms of insulator and resistiviy but what I want to know is are they worth it - I can get a standard set for 40 quid circa - I change my plugs every 5000 miles anyway at least. What do you think???

IMHO, a plug lead which is working properly is a plug lead which is working properly. No large maker I know of used Magnecor. If they gave any true benefits surely they would have?

Hi
there are only two ways to determine the correct ignition advance for your engine either on a dyno, or with a stop watch and a hill/drag strip anything else ids just guess work. Plug leads are plug leads, condition counts more than brand.

Think you are right guys, I will experiment come the new year when I finally get to do a run - will push an offset at 1 degree at a time. Or bite the bullet and get it on a dyno! But then I know I will be just dissapointed:-). At least now I can kid myself that I am getting 300 HP "at least..."lol

36 deg is already fairly high ?

You'd really be better spending some money on some dyno time before anything else.

You could maybe experiment with the fuel there too.

Leads...if they're good quality and in good order, they're fine
