I agree about the manifold, my edelbrock had a 3-4mm overhang on some of the ports; admittedly the port was bigger than the manifold but the step must have still caused turbulence. It was worse once the heads were opened out to stage III. I spent several hours with cardboard templates and a burr tool and flexi drive sorting it out. The valley gasket also needed doing in my case but may not with standard ports.
You need to be careful when fitting the manifold, if you just slap it on it can be way off. I noticed a casting mark on the heads that lines up with the divider between the middle ports, you can make a similar mark on the manifold and line both marks up before doing up the bolts.
