Hi guys, Just wondering if anyone knows if a Ford V8 gearbox would fit on to a Chevy block?
It's from a 1993 Supercharged Thunderbird and was looking at rebuilding a MerCruiser 5.7 to put in to the drift truck...... probably be about 300bhp or a tad over that at a guess?!

Hi
Very pleased to see you have realised what shape a proper V8 should be. . . what vintage is the engine? not highly relevent to your question, I am just interested!
The ford unit can be made to fit with the right adaptor plate for the bell housing and the right splines on the clutch, just a bit of a hassel. If you need the chevy bell housing bolt pattern it is here http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/show ... p?t=589652
The ford is here. . .

If you have both already then it is probabaly worth it, however I would consider looking for something manual and chevy (if it has to be manual).
With drift cars do you do a rolling start or start from standing still?
Best regards
Mike

standing starts..... The old 3.5 isn't too bad to be honest, but this engine is sat there and looking sorry for itself, so thought I'd look at cleaning it up, and taking a peek inside! I would say it's going to be 90's as it is a carb engine which is good for me
but it all depends on how much a box will set me back as to weather it finds it's way in to the drifter, or just sold on!

Hi
the reason for asking year is that pre 86 it will be a 2 piece rear seal 1970's head design with a flat tappet cam good for 260 to 350 brake depending on cam, post '86 it will most likley be a "vortec" engine with much better heads and a roller cam good for 320 to 360 bhp as is. More significantly easily tuned to 420 bhp with a cam change and a clean up of the head casting, it is worth checking the head numbers.
There are relativly few manual boxes for the chevy, even for the small block ford V8 there are relativly few and they tend to be marginal for torque capacity and expensive. I would also think that drifting is prtty hard on a layshaft type box with high shock loads. If you need a clutch I would consider a manualised auto like the TH 350 or better still a TH400, it is very tough, especially the 400 much cheeper and will bolt up on the bell housing, admittedly you will have to sort out the clutch and pump drive.
If you still want a true manual then look to the older 4 speed boxes as they will be stronger than the T5 based boxes and cheeper (I am assuming you only use 2 or 3 speeds in a race and 1st just to pull away.
