Recomend me a gearbox!

Post by Jono FD3 »

OK here goes nothing!
I've got a 350 chevy sitting in the shed and I'm looking to see what options I have regarding the gearbox, needs to be manual though!

OK the engine is as follows:

350ci chevy 4 bolt
double blip (or cammel hump) heads
forged pistons
lightend flywheel, rods and crank

aparently it was built to run a blower and should put out 450 - 500hp, but obviously I would need to open things up to see what's actualy inside!! So what are my options and what sort of money would we be looking at to get one?

Cheers
Jono

Well, you can't really go wrong with a Tremec T56. Budget a grand for a decent box plus bits though ....

Hi
With those heads and no blower you realistically will see about 420bhp tops and about 380ftlb of torque, assuming no blower, I suspect that with a blower type cam and lowered compression you are looking at more like 360 bhp and 350 ftlb of torque. What I am slowly getting around to saying is that a t5/6whilst being a good box and tough may be a bit big for your use Also do you need six gears? I would think the higher rated version of the t5 would've better simply because it is smaller and and will require less tin bashing to make it fit. If you are going to fit more heads and a lumpier cam, add nitrous, or a blower then you will need a tougher box, but on your current spec I would seriously consider a t5.
Best regards

T5, really? They seem to start having issues with 400bhp/350lbs/ft in Cosworths .....?

The T56 is big and strong, but then there is potential for future improvements etc. that's all I was thinking.

Trouble with compromises, they hurt future plans, as they tend to restrict things or need changing when upgrading, when, if done right in the first place thats not the case,

I got through 2 T5's on my twin turbo RV8. They didn't break but just got very whiney after about 5000 miles but they weren't new when fitted.
I've now changed to a new T56 and hoping for a longer life. However I don't like the gearshift as it's a bit agricultural to say the least. I've tried different oils but it made no difference.

Very good boxes, but they aren't that common and command a high price particularly as the drift boys have gotten onto them in recent years. You used to be able to get them for a couple of hundred quid but they go for a lot more in ebay etc now. Usually requires a pricey bellhousing to match to whatever V8 you want to use, and by the time you've done that, you could have bought a Tremec!

What car is it for, and how big is your bellhousing area and trans tunnel ?

The current popular box is the TR6060 and there are many variants. It's basically a modern T56, still very strong but supposed to shift a lot nicer.

If you dont need or want 6 gears or the 6 is just physically too big, then a TKO500 or 600 would be more than adequate.

But TBH, even despite my huge 6th gear....Ive often went for a 7th lol

For the cost it would be to buy a R-154 and bellhousing etc., I just dont see it as good value anymore. A Yank box bolting to a yank engine will be easier to fit, and any clutch parts, bellhousing etc will be off the shelf, and hence cheaper.
