Torquing up the crank pulley

Post by v8alex »

I want to torque up the crank pulley. The only way I can think of holding everything in place is to bolt a long rod on the output flange of the gearbox, stick the box in 4th and then use the torque wrench on the crank pulley bolt. The crank bolt needs about 220Nm and the R380 gearbox is rated for 380Nm of torque, so I should be fine - correct ?

I have seen an earlier post on this topic with other people removing the starter and jamming the flywheel, or dropping the sump and using a block of wood to jam the crank, but I'd rather not take things apart at this stage if I can help it.

I have enough room behind the pulley on my MGB to get a pair of 24" stillsons on from underneath to hold against the torque wrench.

Hi,
i always used the method, when engine in the car,4th gear and a glamourous assitant with there foot hard on the brake.
Or if out the car a pry bar or such like against the ring gear and a bell housing bolt.
Have heard of people sticking rope in plug holes with pistons near TDC but never had the need to try that one.
Cheers John.

4th rather than 5th (as John says) so you're not loading the layshaft.
