Early type EDIS HT connectors- where from

Post by Quagmire »

The HT leads I have been using from the scrappies to run my Megajolt setup have finally started to give up the ghost- not bad considering that a couple of them have been perished from day one and were only supposed to be temporary :shock:

So, as i have potentially another two vehicles to make up custom HT leads for I figured I should invest in the tools and do them myself rather than buy readymade.

Question is - where can i get new early EDIS coil connectors from? These are the type with the hooks on, as seen at the top of the page here:

Have been googling all morning with no luck, so if anyone can point me in the right direction it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks :D

Here's one source:-

Although I don't like the idea of bending the terminals - the originals come ready formed to 90 degrees and are pretty strong.

I've just used the old connectors and fitted new cable to them. The terminals are well made and will survive being opened up (slightly) and re-crimped.

To remove the boot from the old cable easily, get some grease between the two using a small screwdriver. Red brake rubber grease is ideal.

Hack the cable off flush with the terminal and insert small snipe nose pliers into the bit of cable left, and bend outwards just enough.

I used a BNC (video) connector crimping tool I already had which does a good job and is readily available at a good price.

Made my own in the end with EDIS terminals from ebay, and HT lead and plug terminals from vehicle wiring products. I bought a Coax crimp from amazon and that did the job perfectly.

All in all I made a set of leads for just under the price of having someone make them for me but I have the crimper for next time, some spare HT lead and connectors too :)

Must be working well too as it just passed the MOT this morning with following emissions (Petrol):

CO= 1.01%
HC= 123ppm

Thats on SU's, was impressed with the low HC levels...

The correct cable for EDIS leads is 8mm - and last time I looked VWP only did 7mm. May not matter, of course.

I paid 5 quid for 8 leads from a scrappie and got 8mm cable here:-

Easier to make your own to exactly the right length on a non standard setup rather than having to measure and get them made up. ;-)

I went with the 7mm, as you say - it was all VWP had.

I had wanted to do 8mm, but my googling skills must have been off on the day I looked about!

I decided that 7mm would be OK as I had been using a lashup of 50% old perished Ford leads, and 50% 7mm standard Rover leads with the "hotwires" adapters to convert one end to EDIS, and had no problems with those.

What forced my hand was that some of the Ford leads were so old they were beginning to crack and had just started to leak sparks when damp.

Even with the cracks they showed no signs of leaking at night when dry...

Time will tell how the 7mm's hold up :D
