Injector fitting.

Post by ihatesissycars »

Hello all,

Just a quick one this, my injectors, I can't get them to seat satisfyingly where they push into the manifold.

I've never had this efi setup before or even played with one so here's how i fitted them.

Insert injectors in fuel rail with a smear of grease, put clips on, repeat x8, put rail onto manifold. Thats about it really!

I'm concerned i'm going to get an air leak around one or more injectors so i thought i'd best check!

I'll second that!

I think basically i'm not happy that i can get them to go into the manifold far enough to seat satisfyingly.

As long as the outer circumference of the seal has entered the manifold sufficiently to pass the machined lead-in taper, all will be fine. I normally use a smear of engine oil on the seals but vaseline will be just fine. The seal doesn't bottom out against anything, it seals purely by diametrical compression (hey, that sounds cool!) as it is trapped between the injector and the manifold.

apart from mine lol

i found a leak on one of my injectors where it connects to the fuel rail

so i stripped it all off and replaced it with a spare i had

didnt use new seals but it hasnt sealed i tapped them in dry

now when i try to start it purged fuel out of everywhere

i shall try vaseline too

fit the seals to the injectors? or push into the manifold then fit the injectors?
v8's everywhere at least the one in the spare bedrooms gone now

The seals must be fitted to the injectors first, they physically cannot ride over the end of the injector once in the bore of either the fuel rail or the inlet manifold.
I once made the mistake some years back of installing dry - guess what, yep, they leaked! The seals need lubrication or they will almost certainly tear on fitment. It only takes a tiny little tear or nick in the surface of the rubber to give a large leak of petrol at 36psi (ish).

that'll be it then

ive got my old set pulled off now and all the rubber hoses on the injectors is covered in rips and tears all over

strip the lot off again tomorrow and have a look since petrols like paint thinner and guess what my intake manifold is painted!

anyone know a good place to get recon injectors?

I've realised my mistake. . . . .

The fuel rail end of the injector has a groove around it for its retaining clip which is level with the exit to the fuel rail when inserted the correct amount but if the injector is pushed in until it seats the clip locates on the injector still just lower down it which is when the injector barely goes into the manifold. With the clip in its correct position it all fits together alot better in the manifold just not as far into the fuel rail however the hole in the rail the injector goes into isn't tapered so it should still seal just fine.
