sd1 flywheel skim and lightening.

i hace to get my flywheel skimmed but i mite aswel get it lightened. how much should i take off it and where abouts can it be taken off the flywheel from? it is for a road car and don't want nothing super light.

This debate has happened before, but if it were my knees seperated form a 30 to 40 year old flywheel by a 1/4" of ally and a piece of 18 gauge steel I wouldn't do anything that would reduce it's strength any more than I had to, I would just take a light skim to flatten it, infact I would recommend you get it shot peened to reduce the liklyhood of any cracks forming. If you want a lighter flywheel I would invest in a new lightweight steel one.

Hi

I would agree with mike on this one, I had a very high spec group 'a' ford pinto decide to 'eject' its fly wheel at about 8,000 rpm in a old RS2000. luckily for me it missed my feet but wrote the car off as it exited the roof!!!!!! The next Pinto had a steel flywheel AND 3 extra dowls plus some very exspensive bolts before it saw any action (oh I also needed new undies too lol)

DONT skim it, DONT lighten it, just get a decent replacment or as mike suggested a good steel lightweight one and at least some new bolts for it!
