Gearbox mounts

Post by topcatcustom »

Will these do http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/UNIVERSAL-EXHAUST ... 1e56f39c10

as I already have some... or do I need the ones listed for LT77 specifically? Just not sure if the cheap ones are strong enough- though the engine is obviously on proper mounts and will also have 2 stay bars to stop it twisting... Is there any real force on the rear of the gearbox?

Personally I wouldn't use an exhaust mount for a gearox mount.

My GB mount for my LT77 was at least 3.5" dia. Has a hefty metal base/ cup that it sits in.

I can post pics and dimensions if you want?

Please don't use the ones you show!!!
They will be as much use as a handbrake on a canoe.
The box is heavy as you know so get the proper ones for the job and fit and forget them.
cheers

Oh fine  I'l order some proper ones, I was just wondering as the box sits on top of the mounts in a cradle and engine mounts will stop the box twisting- but yep they will probably break anyway!

Thatta boy
You know it makes sense.
With the torque that motor of yours is going to be chucking out it will be doing it's best to turn the car over as soon as you start it, so chocolate bobbins aint going to help

Whats better, the 1 single square type or 2 proper bobbin types? I'd have thought the bobbins as they sit at about 4 and 8 O'clock, must give more support.

You are right the bobbins at an angle will do a better job IMO.
Spreads the load more.

Don't forget the bolt with its rubber mushroom that goes into the bottom of the mount area. You need to keep the bobbins compressed or they tear in a big bounce......

If the tail of the gearbox is supported I would do nothing to restrain it. A single mount is better with the box sort of floating on it. If the chassis flexes ( which it might ) things could bind and the most likely candidate to break is the gearbox casing. High horsepower drag cars usually have the gearbox just hanging off the motor plate with no rear mount at all. In this case without a plate but a secure mount I would support but not restrain.
