Gav,

what's the spec of your laptop (processor speed, memory)? What operating system are you running and version and what version of Internet Explorer?

Have you got up-to-date anti-virus and spyware and have you applied all the Windows Updates?

Cheers,

Ian

How long has it been doing that for. I've had no end of problems with my internet over the last week. Keeps logging me off every 5 mins or so and it's a pain in the arse. Seems to be ok since last night though

If you have upgraded to internet exploder 7 then revert back to version 6. I have had about 60 calls at work where the upgrade has broken everything. so much so I am about to run a script on the network to revert every PC back. Better still go get firefox and enjoy surfing the net again.

Well its old and slow (eg it has win 98!!!) so whatever version IE came with that.

Its been doing it for about a week now with no signs of letting up and ref the anti spyware/virus stuff i don't know, probably none or only something seriously outdated. I do have a pop up blocker though!

I did try to update to IE7 but that didn't work. I might drill a hole thru it to see if that helps.

Hi Gav

just a sugestion, if its a fairly old pc, you could go the route of partitioning the disc, installing Linux and surfing under Linux and a suitable browser, then use windows boot for everything else. All the instructions are on the linux website.
You could walk around being smug, 8) knowing you are garunteed to be virus, trogan and spyware free.
Having finally got cheesed off with windows and viruses (even behind hardware and software firewalls and continually updating XP this is what I am going to do in the next couple of weeks.

That's a bit of a rash statement, have a read http://www.claymania.com/unix-viruses.html. Just wait until everyone from 4 to 100 starts using linux and see how invulnerable it is then with everyone logged on as root like they do admin in windows. Besides if its that good an OS why the need to duel boot?

Try Firefox Gav and see if it works for you.

er... dual boot it because word, exel, and a thousand other packages only run under windows.
Linux is not perfect, I did not say it was, again for somthings, ie surfing the web it is better than windows, not actually because it is better just no one writes spyware or viruses for it. If you havent noticed windows has backdoors in it that are deliberatly put in by microsoft that allows those that hoast/own the WWW to look at your hard disc when you are on line and access the traffic you put on the web this is used by the gits that write vireses trogens etc to screw up your computer.

My world is not black and white it has shades of grey in it, I also believe somthings are better than others at certain jobs and believe that there is nothing made that is perfect for every thing. :D
I was just trying to sugest a siolution to a particular problem, that of viruses and the like when surfing.
Best regards

MAC, MAC, MAC, MAC

Hell it's been bulletproof!

But can be a bugger to find software that you would expect to find everywhere for Windows. But get the right source and it is all available.

Don't know how it will run with megasquirt - never tried but probably end up with a windows dog for that!

OK TONIGHT IT WILL GET VIRUSSED!

LOL hope not M8 but even mac users are going over to M$ with the new Intel ones.

I think its more education that OS related. Most windows users are inexperienced, get an email that says click me so they do plus they are usually logged in and account with full admin rights. Come on all you guys looking at this, how many of you are on an account with restricted rights?
Linux on the other hand isn't exactly an out of the box experience yet so the people using it mostly know what they are doing.
If all you want is safe browsing then you could run XP via BartPE on cd with a browser on it. You are effectively running XP twice and they are completely independent so your main os cant get infected. Or if you still want to run Linux then you could do it via VM ware or virtual PC (which is free) and still have both OS's running at the same time. Alternatively just don't go poking around in the dark corners of the internet. You know where I mean  well Tony does anyway

you can get it there for version 2

or http://laotzu.acc.umu.se/pub/mozilla.or ... .5.0.9.exe for version 1.5 but try 2 first.

Gav,
Have you installed anything lately? If so, take it off and try surfing after.

Also run Ad Aware or similar, well worth doing anyway - just might have picked something up.

If you run anti-virus, might be worth turning that off and trying. Have seen a dodgy update cause mayhem.

If it's still SNAFU'd Firefox is well worth a go. Or re-install IE and then run updates etc.

Nothing wrong with Win 98 and old IE as such, I have a 7yr old laptop here running it, never been a prob, never re-installed etc and it's been on all day for all that time. I use it to run an old IE browser for testing websites I'm building and it's fine.

off-thread, imho Macs are burdened with Safari though 'Fox is an option, and Linux is way techy for a desktop machine. I'm forced to have a Mac in the building for testing purposes, and no longer need Linux since everything I need also runs on Windows anyway.

For a home machine so many things are so easily available so I'd stick with it, even tho Windows can be a bit of a PITA sometimes.

I got an older laptop here, clean instal and updated to IE7 and it didn't want to know, reverted back and it's been fine ever since, i'm sure it's down to how the machine handle it, but it's way to techy for me !! john
So thats where it went !
