Thermostat housing gasket

In the last month I have changed this gasket on no less than 3 occassions.

On each occassion a gasket of different appearance was used. The sealant I used on 2 occassions was Permatex No 3, and on the other Permatex No 4.

In all 3 cases, coolant appears to be leaking out through the gasket.

I have never had problems like this before with this gasket.

Has anyone experienced similar problems? What type of sealent have you used? Has anyone not used a gasket at all, and just used sealant such as silicone with success?

All advise gratefully received.

Hi Ron,

I've always made my own out of 0.8mm gasket paper & lightly smeared both sides of the gasket with grease & never had a leak.

Could the housing be warped, damaged or possibly cracked?

A number of people in the GT40 fraternity have bad problems with these gaskets - but mainly on Ford Units

The face of the housing has warped and caused the gasket to move letting the fluid out
Refacing the housing or buying a new one cured the problem

Never had a problem.

As mentioned previously, check both surfaces for flatness. Particularly as some seepage may have corroded the surfaces.

Also, are the bolts allowing the housing to clamp fully?, or are the bolts going tight prematurely.

Thanks to all for the feedback...most appreciated.

I keep the threads clean, and lube them with a little aniti seize, so they always go right in..no problems there.

I can only assume that the face of the outlet must be warped and as such no longer sitting square, either that or the gaskets are just rubbish.

I'll change the outlet for a new one I purchased some years ago and see how that one goes.

I'll give an update when all is done.

Well I changed the gasket today and so far so good!

I ran a straight edge along the surface of the outlet, and it seemed fine.

This time I used Permatex No 3 which is a non setting gasket cement.

Fingers crossed no leaks...so far

i would use Dirko or loctie 5910 black flange sealant i have had problems with blue hylomar leaking like this on both sides of gasket
