I have a VW T25 camper with a RV8 fitted, at the rear, obviously. The exhaust supplied with the conversion uses the original Rover downpipes and Y-piece running forwards before being mated to a Honda silencer box which exits in front of the rear wheel.
This arrangement is far from ideal, as it passes below several rubber water pipes and fuel lines, necessitating extensive heatshielding. It is also lower than the rest of the engine & gearbox, putting it at risk from speed humps.
My thinking is to use a simple arrangement running short pipes towards the outside of the van on each side to a silencer below each rear wing, so effectively two short separate exhausts. As I live fairly near to PD Gough, getting them made in stainless would be straightforward.
Any thoughts on this arrangement?

LOUD!
Like over 100db at 2000rpm
I have on the GT40 tubular headers into 4 into1 into 2 silencers over the gearbox. All in stainless and it is loud like you would not believe..
So from me - keep the exhaust run as long as possible and avoid the stainless - it will be louder than mild steel by about 15 - 20 % Also if possible put in a balance bar between the 2 sides.
That said I believe the rear boxes from a 2l Cavalier can be put to good use if you have enough soace (one per side) fairly cheap and do a good bit to quieten the engine. (I did not have enough space)

Owner of an "On the Road" GT40 Replica by DAX powered by 3.9Hotwre Efi, worked over by DJ Motors. EFi Working but still does some kangaroo at low revs (Damn the speed limits) In to paint shop 18/03/08.
I use the cheap, flat oval turbo mufflers from Real Steel. They do a few configurations of inlet and outlet connections. About 20 quid a side for my twin system. And the MOT bloke says he's happy with them. Basically a Rover 4.6, RV8 style manifolds with collector outlets cut back so I have 2.5 inch pipes. About a foot of pipe after the 1st bend then straight into the cheap mufflers. Then 90 degree bend turned out under the sill just in front of the rear wheels.

Will have a look when I get home. I seem to have been the only person at work who has been listeneing to the weather forecasts and got up early to avoid jams.
