RV8 Intermediate Serpentine Front End diagram

Post by pitsnow »

Has someone got a pluming diagram of the oil ways for the intermediate Serpentine front-end cover? I am wondering about the various openings in the oil ways.
I assume they are for the oil cooler connection? If so, what goes where?

Don;t you just use a base plate for the oil filter and make it remote and plum the intercooler in that way?

Again, I might be wrong on this but I thought both the Serpentine and intermediate front have a built-in thermostat function to allow the oil to either pass trough the oil cooler or by-pass it.
Therefore, it would be beneficial to use the existing openings for the oil cooler lines, should what I described above be trough.

Are you referring to the open threaded holes, one in the bottom and one in the side? I wasn't sure about these so i copied the spare 4.6 cover i have here and blanked them off.

Can you not remove the blanking caps in the side and see if theres a valve or similar for the oil cooler? Asides from the main pressure relief valve of course.

I think this came up on another thread, and somebody knowledgable said that the thermostat and oil cooler feed/return connections were built into the cover - confirming that you're right that's what they are but no help telling you which is which (sorry).

I had a search trough the forum but could not find anything related.
But Goggle came to the rescue as so often.

I found the answer to my question.
Have a look at page 15 of 49 of the PDF file, link below.
Might be worth bookmarking or downloding.

Whe the stat opens and oil passes thru the cooler would it be bypassing the filter?

There must be an internal connection as not all cars used an oil cooler.
But I agree, the Rover manual is not very clear on this.
But bypassing the filter would be a design flaw on a magnitude I cannot imagine that this would be the case.

Anyone worked this out?
I've just bought an intermediate cover for my early 4.2 and it looks like the oil cooler take off is before the filter but it comes back in to the filter too. However I can't work out how oil would go to the cooler in the first place as there doesn't appear to be a thermostat in there to stop it going straight to the filter only all the time.

Anyone ?

I'm pretty sure that the oil (when the stat for the cooler is open) goes to the cooler then to the oil filter housing, thru the filter then off round the engine and when the stat is closed it just goes straigt to the filter. 90% sure of that. . . . :?: :?

Hmmm, it doesn't look to me like there is a stat in the timing cover itself - is there?

If there is a stat in the cover then it must be a non serviceable item as the only removable cover I can see is for the pressure regulator.

The cooler take off from the cover appears to be in parallel with the filter and the oil would just take the route of lease resistance - which that would be when running I have no idea.

Perhaps you just have a certain amount of oil always going to the cooler?

I'm confused :?

I need to fit a remote filter anyway so to be sure I will have to fit a stat in that instead. Just seems a shame not to use the takeoff points on the cover.

Is there a Haynes manual that covers later Range Rovers?
