3.9 Discovery hesitaition among other things

Post by kevinr »

Hi,

Soooo glad I found this forum, as the landrover ones tend to be Tdi orientated, and finding good knowkedge on V8's is not easy.

right, the problem I have.

So far, I've found out my alternator is dead..high pitched whining from the engine when accelerating (I Think this is related), the battery no longer charges and smoke/burning smell from the alternator..this is getting repaird on Tuesday, garage reckons the regulator has popped, and the rev counter no longer works.

The car also hesitates/misfires when under hard acceleration, usually in 1st and 2nd but starting to notice it more in 3rd, this comes and goes on a day to day basis, sometimes the engine is cold, sometimes it only starts when it gets hot.

Now, I've been told that there could be a problem between the starter motor, alternator and battery and the 'common stud' (whatever that is), which would explain the failing alternator and the hesitation.

If this is true (and can someone tell me what the common stud is) I assume that this needs to be corrected before the alternator is fixed, or I'll just burn that one out, and how can I check this..I've looked but short of removing the protective casing I can't tell, I have a volt meter, so any clues as to where I need to place the terminals and on what settings would be appreciated...There is no smell of burning/melting wire, and I can only assume the earth is good, otherwise the car just wouldn't start.

Thanks in advance.

Kev.

Oh, it's a 1997 3.9 V8 Landrover. if that's any use.

I presume that the common stud is the earthing stud on the rear of the passenger side cylinder head. It can be a bit of a pig to get to, but the engine wiring loom earths at that point.
