DLM8 Distributor

Post by Marsho »

Hi, what I need to know is what coil to use with a DLM8 type of distributor? will a standard 12 volt coil be okay or do I fit a ballast resistor, if I do need a ballast resistor how do I wire it in , does it just fit in line on the positive wire? thanks David.( ps the engine is a 3.5 rover sd1 type on an of road car ).

The coil that matches the DLM8 dizzy is the Lucas DLB198 which requires an unballasted 12v supply.

What vehicle is this? you need to check the voltage from the wire that supplies the coil to make sure that it does not have a ballast resistor in line if so it will only show approx 7 volts with the ignition switched on.

If this is the case you will need a new feed from the ignition circuit to provide full voltage.

Best to check the voltage at the coil end, ballast resistors can be quite
small and tucked away in th harness.

Checked the supply and it is 12 volt, only thing is how do I wire in the dizzy, as it has two spade type connectors on a little power pack type of thing fitted to the side of it, cheers David.

if it is the two wire module the wires are one to each side of the coil. The one nearest the edge of the module goes to neg, the one inside that, is the pos.
