502CI GM Big Block ( whats it worth )

Post by Krackle »

Hi all, im new to the site.
Wondering if you guys could help.

I sourced an engine for my old car which i no longer have, so i was planning on selling it as im turning towards the rover v8.

Basically is a 2007 502ci GM Big Block

Has just been run in on a bench dyno, still in the crate.

What sort of price do you think i should put on it. Aiming to get it in the for sale section, but not sure how to value it correctly.

still a f-kin monster! Got a more detailed spec, like comp ratio, heads etc. might help ya sell it. Did you get it over here or import it from the septics?

Gen VI "vortec" truck engine by the look of it, D port exhaust ports so they should be the nice factory head casting and certainly a "truck" EFI inlet on it (no bad thing) mild hydraulic roller cam that can be easily upgraded. It really depends if you are selling it with everything to have it running, but Real steel sell the marine version for £6k and the one you have is probably a better starting point for a road car, however it has been run and how many people want a Chevy big block (actually alot of people want one but few cars and projects can make use of them,) as you found getting one to fit in is a big deal what I think I am saying is have list everything you can about it and have a go at 4.5K but be prepared to accept less if you don't get much interest.
An MGB with one in now that would be interesting!!!!

Personally, I would look on the Summit or GM site and work out how much the same engine would cost (and I must admit I havent seen one in this configuration!), divide the $ cost by 2, add shipping tax and VAT....then drop the price to below that!! It also depends on what heads you have iron or alloy?

I think Ive seen used (but good) 502's go for between £750 & £1750 depending on spec

Only issue with these blocks is, they have a bhp limit of 800bhp and the usual tuning goodies dont fit these blocks easily (due to different castings) so they are good as a large / easy bhp monster....but not so good if you want to lean on them somewhat

For the price your asking, I would definitely try and find out exactly what you have there.
A quick search pulls up some iron headed 502's with 340(ish) bhp (and having had a few the iron heads weigh an absolute ton by themselves!)
Im having trouble trying to find it on the GM site http://www.gmperformanceparts.com/Parts ... p?engine=3 and also http://www.crateenginedepot.com/store/n ... 3GIxhUVtHh
If anything I would guess at a HT or HO it doesnt look the ZZ (which is regarded as the performance model) or the Ramjet
Too me - for that money, I would want to know exact specs of what it is and whats inside

:whs
I would also make sure it is a complete running set up for that money (which is what I thought I said earlier). I would be carefull about just quoting what I say, research it so you are confident what it is.
Iain has alot more knowlage of the big block than I, so I would follow what he says, I still think those are the decent head castings by the port shape but I would check by casting number, do you have the GM part no on the crate? if so plug it into google (or goodwrench) and find out what it is, you will end up getting more money for it that way.
Best of luck
