Gearstick modification

I have a long gearstick supplied with the remote for my R380 box. I want to shorten this so I can fit a nice shiny short chrome gearstick.



In the middle of the gearstick, there is a bulge which is metal on the outside, but I guess rubber on the inside to act as a shock absorber for the driver. Can the gearstick be separated here by simply slicing through it with the angle grinder, or is there a more elegant solution ?
