Starter Motor

Post by Chorlton »

Right, getting close now !
Just looking at the starter motor and I notice the connecting wire from the solenopid to the main starter assembly is very loosely fitted at both ends as if its been off.

What terminal on the starter should the main voltage attach to and which one should the link wire from the solenoid to the main motor be connected to please?
Many thanks

Thanks for that.
The connecting wire on my starter is connected to the outermost terminal !
Though I note my starter isnt identical in that the connecting wire from the solenoid connects to a screw on connector on the main body of the starter

Ill siwtch it over tomorrow. Ive got the battery charging up, and a can of Halfords 20-50 ready to bung in for the initial run in then Valvoline for later.

Its getting exciting now !

Electrically it doesn't matter which way round they go, its just a switch so they are either connected together or not. Probably easier to connect the battery to the outer one mind you.

Well I moved the link connection to the rear one and it sounded better.
Connected up a decent pos and neg lead, then a flying lead for the small connecter and touched down !!
Clunk !!
Tested the battery (70AH bought last year) showing 12.8V.
Left it on charge overnight, tested it again. Even after 24 hour charge its showing 13.4V and within 1 minute thats dropped to 12.8 so I suspect the battery's gone dead. I took the starter out again to check but it looks like a full recon unit and worked fine.
I would still have thought the battery should have had enough poke to at least turn the engine with the plugs out, but not a chance.
So its back to the Motor Factors on Monday for a new battery.
Bugger !!

If it has been stood for a year you might be able to bring it back to life with a glauber salts treatment. Drain the battery of the electrolite, refill with a saturated solution of glauber salts (it is an old digestive remedy like epsom salts) charge it for about 6 to 12 hours with that in, take off charge and drain the battery, refill with electrolite (fresh if you can get it) and away you go. It cleans the lead sulfite off the electrodes in the battery which builds up an insulating layer stopping the battery working.

Thanks Mike, but the things still under guarantee so Ill just whip it back for a replacement.
In the meantime I pulled the battery from my camper and got the engine actually turning over, so tomorrow Ill prime the Oil pump and hopefully the beast will burst into life.
