High Idle, Please Help

Post by Big-E »

I have a 1977 Olds Delta 88, with a 1986 Pontiac Parisienne 305 engine, and it idles really high. I know that this is normal when you start it up, but it never idles down. I don't have a tach on my car, so I'm not sure what the RPM's are at. The carb is from the original engine, which also did the same thing, and was part of the reason for the swap.

Hi and welcome....
A few guesses here: carb idle out of adjustment, throttle not returning/closing (weak spring or old dry cable hanging up maybe), possibly an air leak (spray carb cleaner around joins, carb base etc to show up).

Thanks for the advice. I am going to get a carb tune-up and have the guy also look at the automatic choke. I hope that will solve the problem.
