Post by Ralphh85 »

how many watt are V8 starter motors? if they vary then take a 3.9 range rover one for instance?

also what size flywheel do they usually have?

cheers

Hello Ralphh85,

I can't help you as far as flywheel diameter, but as far as starter motors go, my new 4.6 has the starter motor that was originally fitted to my 1974 3.5, and it has no problems at all in starting or turning the engine.

well back to basics im wantign to know if a 1.8K series starter motor will turn a V8?

upgrading the battery is no problem, just if the starter has the power!

because the rover V8 ones dont fit in to a PG1 bellhousing. rover ks eries ones do.

im goign to make an adaptor plate to fit the V8 to the PG1, and make another adaptor to fit the K series flywheel to the V8 crank, so that i can use the k series clutch setup (from a freelander) which will fit the input shaft tot he 'Box.

but this forces me to use a K4 startermotor as it has to fit the bellhousing and also the flywheel.

if you get what i mean!

edit, does anoyone know how many watt V8 ones are???

Well the Montego Diesel starter which was fitted to the PG1 box is 1.5kW I believe.

I will try to remember to measure a flywheel later.

1.5Kwwould definatly start a v8, found the K4 one is800/900w, might not.

i dont know if the K series/T/M series starters are interchangable. but will find out :)

cheers!

SD1 flywheel is 13 1/4" including ring gear if thats a help.

You could try LSUK for data on the starter motors.

According to the prestolite web site, you need prestolite part no. 66925165, and that is a 1.4Kw unit

There's an application guide here listing engines and relevant part numbers: http://www.prestolite.com/pgs_products/ ... ss_ref.php

well apparently PG1's come with a 1.4KW as standard so i dont need to worry, i thinkt he flywheel might be tad smaller but im sure it wont make much difference.

would act as a lightened flywheel to, added bonus!

cheers for the help! just have to sus how to adapt the V8 crank on to the PG1 flywheel now but cant be to hard.

I measured a Range Rover flywheel as being 13" dia give or take a bit.

I think I would try to fit a Montego 2.0 litre flywheel, either petrol or diesel, I think they were the same part. I'm sure the V8 flywheel won't fit inside the bellhousing.

I'd also see if I could use the adaptor plate that was fitted between the O series block & PG1 gearbox, at least as a template.
