The "running in" oil will mimic the grade of engine oil that would normally be used in that engine.

For a Rover V8, a 20w-50 "running in" oil would be used, then changing to a mineral 20w-50 or maybe 20w-60 after that.

As for the Chev?

Is running in oil any good.
Current V8 car TVR 400SE 240 BHP
Current Project TVR Tasmin Race, with 3.9 running at 230 BHP
Currently building a 4.6 300 BHP Xbolted Engine for it. Solid Lifters and Group A rockers, Stange 4 heads, Pocketed piston, fully balanced.

My understanding for running in my chevy is you use a single viscosity mineral oil normally 30W.
This is what I am planning for mine any way.
I will put it in for about 100-200 miles and run it gently (if I don't run it in on an engine Dyno that is) then stick in a 15/40 sinthetic (to be changed every 2 to 3k.
Mine is going to be rebuilt on the top end every 6k miles and stripped and freshened every 24K if it doesn't get fiddled with before hand.
Don't know if that is any help, but it is a chevy and it will be run in.

i would use a cheap oil with no friction modifiers in it as you want some wear to happen otherwise you will or should i say could get glazing ...

i always do a first runup with some cheap shite in it only until the engine temp gauge starts to move , then dump the oil that gets rid of any unwanted bits and bobs , then run a half decent oil for a 1000 miles then switch to something good there after
