i just bought one of these :

and fitted it in my top hose ( 35mm od one ) and the fan don't switch on ....any idea what temp range of switch i need , the wiring works as i took the wires off the switch and shorted them togther and the fans come on , but even when the temp gets right to the top of the gauge they don't switch in .. i would like them to come just after the half way point ??

Try a couple of things
Take out the thermostat switch
Connect up to a multi meter
Boil a kettle and check to see if it switches
If it does the unit works but may be set too high for your set up
If it doesn't ask for a replacement from the vendor

Now I don't know what your cooligsystem is like so need to see if you have the unit fitted on inlet to Radiator or outlet from radiator (one is a lot hotter than the other!)

Also have you managed to gat all the air out the system - everything may work but jus t not be "full"

Could you have it on the "cool" side and it never actually gets hot enough on that side for the switch? In that case you would probably want a much cooler switch - like 60 degrees not on at 95.

Some checks are needed first

Hi Ian , my next step is to check the thermostat ,might as well replace it as if it's out 78 degree ??
it's a std 3.5 v8 , with lpg so the heater pipes also route through the vaporsier
with a early landrover v8 rad , 2 little pipes on the off side and i have the unit fitted into the top hose within 4 inchs of the rad
as i say the wring is fine as i just shorted the two wires coming from the switch and the fans switch on ... so that bits ok ..lol
with the ngine ticking over the gauge will climb to all most the red and still no switch on , i didn't let it go further i switched the fans on , i have wired in a manual override and a light which tells me if they are on or not , you can some times feel the vibes from the fans but not always
better safe than sorry

Switch temp depends on where you have it (top or bottom hose) and what stat your using. As you have it in the top I would say your still a bit high even if your using an 88deg stat, I would aim for something about 90 possibly. Your probably also suffering from not getting all the air out the top hose so effectively your switch is sitting in air and not water. The bottom hose IMHO is a better place to have a fan switch but it should be cooler possibly a couple of degrees cooler than the stat your using.

i did have one of those adjustable ones ( it's a flex a lite setup , ie: fans and controller http://www.flex-a-lite.com/auto/html/lo ... ctric.html that has a probe thats pops inside the top hose where it clamps onto the rad , but it kept leaking so i thought i'd replace it with this and i wish i hadn't now ...lol
it's only 3 inchs from where the old one was ....??

it worked fine apart from the leaks , and it was set to half way

Yes I thought the same about the kenlow type switch thats why I went for one of these

got a new switch today and the fans now cut in ,but the gauge is TOO close to the red for my liking
so i'm now fitting a nissan one (intermotor no: 50310 ) with temp range of 90 85 .. the one that came with the kit is a 95 85
that should be better

I use the adjustable one as well. But I also fitted an 82 degrees thermostat in the housing. I set the adjustable fan switch to approx 88-90 degrees C. This way I know I have full flow of water at about 84 C so the electronic jobby can work ok. I also cut a small 6mm square hole out of the flange on the thermostat and fitted it with the hole at the top in the housing to clear any air from cold. This works just fine for me.

perfect , 90:85 , cycles perfectly either side of the gauge centre point

and i have a 74 degree stat
