If you're prepared to strip the engine then taking a bit off the rear of the crank won't make any big difference to the engine. It's just a smidgen off some rotating mass. Don't forget people happily change clutch packs with no issues.

As for the box, you'll have to weigh up if that's a cheaper option, maybe a spacer plate is the solution?

I would do the input shaft, if your careful you shouldn't have to take the shaft out as your only looking to buff the splines of the end. As Boosted said though a spacer plate would be the ultimate fix but more complex and costly unless you have the tooling.

I've scoured the web a bit over the last day or so and I think it is very clear to me what the problem is. Basically, the R380 gearbox will fit a 300TDi (possibly other diesels too) or a V8. Both variants have different bellhousings and input shafts. I know I have an SD1 bellhousing, but looks like I have the diesel input shaft, which will explain the probelm.

As for a solution, I think the best thing for me to do is to phone around a few experts e.g. RPI and see if they can provide me a V8 input shaft, then it should be a relatively easy job to swap them over, with a replacement oil seal. I'll likely ask a gearbox specialist to do this for me.

Does this seem sensible ?

I don't think you can do that without striping the whole box definitely not an easy swap.

i reckon your best bet instead of rpi (dunno if they can help you there really)

id try giving ashcroft transmissions a bell

www.ashcroft-transmissions.co.uk

they seem to have loads of good stuff for convertions if not can definatly knock you something up

try looking for a late land rover defender factory v8 has to be a defender though the early 90/110's had the lt85 santana gearbox or discovery

dunno if the range rover had it though that may have stuck with the lt77 (dont quote on that)
v8's everywhere at least the one in the spare bedrooms gone now

4x4 box input shaft is useless as it has a really long input shaft.

Why not get the right box, it'll be easier.
