Mallory E spark

Post by ppyvabw »

I am going to ditch the dual points and install an electronic ignition module. Two points the instructions don't cover though that I want to clear up.

1) Do I need the condenser.

2) The power to the unit is taken after the ballast resistor, i.e lower voltage. Where does one connect the bypass wire from the starter, of do I just lose it.

You don't need a condenser.

The bypass wire will come from the switched side of the solenoid. The side that actually feeds the motor not the battery side.

Yeah I know, but where will it go to at the ignition end. Normally its connected straight to the coil, bypassing the resistor. Where will it go in this case because the unit is designed to run of what, 6,7 volts and so a direct 12 volts can't be good.

Also, I have no suppresors anywhere on my car. To stop damage from any electrical noise, should I wire a capacitor across the + and - wires of the e-spark? Will this work, or shall I not bother.

I'm running a Mallory Electronic and have been advised that it's probably not necessary to use the bypass lead. You should be OK without it.

I can't remember which coil mine is. It was a long time ago. It was either a mallory or a Moroso coil and it is shiny. Possibly will be in my folder full of invoices but im not at home so can't check.

I have lanced through the instructions on the net and it doesn;t say what to do with the bypass lead.

The car has been backfiring, and yesterday it blew the back of the exhaust clean off!! It was rusty and old anyway. So got to fix that now because it's spitting flames directly on to the fuel tank. Not really happy about that so need to atleast bodge it to get home to fix it properly.

I have the exact set up you have.
I up-graded from twin points to Ignitor II, and as I had a ballast resistor before I kept it.
I have always had problems starting.
I am rebuilding at the moment and as I am fitting a V8 starter instead of the Hi Torqe B starter I found I now have the bypass connector.
I am wiring this onto the coil as I assume this will improve my starting.
My std B wiring has a ballast supply and direct supply from the starter.
