The current crop of V8 diesels are either very heavy, slow but will tow a house or powerful, lightish, fast but very expensive and complex engines and management systems. It will be a while before these engines make their way into use by normal folks like us. It will come as diesel power has a big future, it will just take a while to reach the masses because of cost.
That link you posted, I don't doubt it will get 70mpg but its not going to get anywhere near that at 170.

I presume it is the GM deisel based on the 4 bolt small block (thick wall casting).
From what I remember it smokes at about 3500 revs, the big problem with the range rover conversions (apart form the huge weight of the thing) was getting the thing geared high enough to make it bearable to drive. You need at least 40 mph/thousand revs to make proper use of it in a rangy. Can't really see you getting closer to 50/55 mph/thousand to get you to 170 flat out (peek power will be well below 3500).

Well this years Lemans winner was an Audi diesel closely followed by a Peugot diesel so it can be done. There was a program on TV just a couple of weeks ago about a yank v8 similar to you are on about Ian. They re-chipped it, a tweak here and there, ran it on bio fuel and it was hitting 600-700 bhp.
The TDV8 doesnt really inspire me. Its a great engine for what its meant for but not exactly a high power racing engine.

On 'Pimp my ride' they fitted the 6.6l TD DURAMAX engine from a Humvee (used in other yank trucks too) to a '60's Impala. Tweaked the turbo, bit of porting, twin high-pressure fuel pumps, and running on bio-diesel.
It got more than 35mpg (reportedly) and they showed it in a drag against a Lambo Mercialago and it SMOKED it!
0-60 in 3 seconds, 1400lbs/ft and 800bhp. The gearbox was almost as wide as the bellhousing all the way back!

You are not wrong. Prices for fuel system parts and clutch/associated parts can be eye-wateringly expensive for these engines.

Google for 'Gale Banks Engineering' if you want to see some reeaal interesting stuff with hi-po turbo diesels. The Original Tom wrote:On 'Pimp my ride' they fitted the 6.6l TD DURAMAX engine from a Humvee (used in other yank trucks too) to a '60's Impala. Went to a lecture about the engine, and it's so quiet, apparently some senior LR people kept filling them up with petrol
