Rover V8 4.6 fit top hats or not

Post by Ianstaffordshire »

Hello looking for a bit of guidance here, today I stripped down the 4.6 gems engine I brought to rebuild and fit in my tvr wedge eventually I was intending on fitting top hat liners as I read they can slip the old ones however now it's in bits it doesn't have liners fitted so is there any benefit from fitting them I intend to up the compression to 10.5 to 11:1 and fit a fast road cam it already is running canems ignition with slightly larger injectors.
What hp should it realise anything over 250 would be nice.

Go for top hats.
Liner slippage on 4.6 engines is well known especially if it’s been overheated and top hats don’t slip.
When rebuilding my 4.6 they’re what I used.

I agree. I've fitted top-hat liners (from Turner Engineering) to all of my 4.6's, and none of them have ever leaked since.

What do you mean - "it doesn't have liners"? Has someone removed them? as all RV8's have iron liners.

I rebuilt my 4.6 - had the same questions on liners.
I had the block pressure tested and found 3x were leaking so that was an easy decision for me in the end, to go with top hat liners and never have to worry about the block again.

The next question though will be; what bore do you want them sir!! so then do you also fit bigger pistons! and increase the CC!! - but then you will have head flow restrictions - and so the list continues!

I supercharged mine so extra CC was not needed - so I retained standard pistons and rotating assembly but depends on your goals?
