Chrysler 383/440 running rough and stalling

Post by jmd87 »

Hiya,

Wonder if anyone can help please.

I have an old American motorhome which has either a Chrysler 383 or 440 engine in it (not sure if a pic would help identify it?) with an Edelbrock 750 manual choke carb

Basically it was stood for about 5 years no starting and just before Christmas I had to do the old replacing of drained fuel tank, filters, fuel pipes, a new manual fuel pump etc and I got it started fine and was running pretty smooth.

Came back after Christmas thing wouldn't start, eventually got it to start but it runs rough now and will stall pretty quick. I am now getting a few backfires from exhaust and also sometimes in the carb itself. I have noticed it now sounds like a tonne of fuel is pouring into the carb when the choke is on which I'm pretty sure wasn't happening before. I read around and general consensus was to bang a regulator after the filter and set it to around 5 PSI which I've done but still similar issues.

I also looked inside by taking the top off to look for any dirt and it seems clean but the bowl was full of fuel so I stopped there and put it all back together and am now here.

Will say I'm not a mechanic but am willing to have a go at anything if I'm pointed in the right direction :)

Thanks for any help in advanced!
Joe

you need to establish if it is a fuel problem, or spark. As well as a general inspection on overall health.

So do that first.

You could well have bits of corrosion inside the fuel system (carb) because of storing a vehicle with E10 fuel in it. I see it a lot on my 1971 Ford Transit. Carb needs rebuilding every spring.
