Efi throttle pot

Post by BrenG »

My SD1 was 30 years old in August.

Fair to say the throttle pot is too. I am aware that they do wear out and replacements are difficult to get hold of.

Is there any way to test for wear? Is there a suitable alrernative available?

It is very likely to be worn out if original. They tend to wear most close to the idle position as obviously they go over that part of the track more.

With the ignition on, measure the voltage output - as you do to set it (between red wire and ground). Get someone to open the throttle and see if it increases smoothly.

A better way is to use a 'scope - that will show any noise or jumping more easily.

Wacky way for an audio type is to rig it up as a volume control between say a CD player and amplifier. It will crackle if faulty when moved.

Vishay did do a very high quality pot which fitted with an adaptor plate. But it seems it is now NLA from RS Components. It's a Vishay Model 971 if you want to try searching for one. Costs about £35. Can do you a drawing of the adaptor plate.

Other way is to open up the existing pot and move the wiper across to an unworn part of the track. Fiddly, but can be done.
