hi all, afew ? about my range rover, does anyone know what ratio the crown wheel and pinion are in a 3.5 efi 4sp auto box, and would a typhoon cam be ok in a heavy car with lpg, any replies greatfull ,thanks

I think a Typhoon in a 3.5 rangie would be a bit poor. They are a bit peaky on a 3.5 and with all the extra weight of the 4x4 I think the low end would be yuck. The typhoon really needs stage 2 heads minimum to perform anyway. A 270 or a hurricane would be a better choice, maybe even a stump puller but they seem to be aimed @ 3.9 engines for some reason.
if you used the the hotter cam and heads you could change the transfer box to a manual, but graft on the 4sp auto (I am pretty sure it can be done) the manual box transfer ratio is lower... will drink gas though
.
If you can run it LPG only you could raise the compression ratio alot which will get back some of the bottom end, a set of long tube headers would also help.

hi kiwicar, i didnt want to get to complicated with it as its my every day car, ive got a block with the typhoon cam in it and 9:75 pistons, just want to make it abit quicker than it is, just thought about changing the engine and crown wheel and pinion would make it better, but i dont want to spend a fortune on it,

its a flapper type efi, its got a tube going into some plate at the front of the air flow, i never had it fitted so cant help to much with that, its duel fuel so its only on gas when i want it to be, i just hoped i could use some of the parts ive already got ,as most of my money is going on the escort, thanks for the reply

Ah. If you look at the size of the hole in the plate in front of the flapper, you'll see where the power has gone!!!
I made the mistake of fitting one of those, and I might as well have fitted a diesel engine!
You need a plenum mounted mixer (with a bigger hole in it), but then you need a flap opener and a vacuum reservoir too. I had to fill in 1/2 the holes in the bigger mixer however to stop the engine running too rich.
Just temporarily remove the plate and drive on petrol, see what a difference it makes....

hi all, well ive fitted a complete ashley exhaust to it and it seems abit quicker, going to do the engine soon as its got water leaks and oil leaks, would 9;75 pistons be ok to use, thanks for any replies, and thanks Chrisjc for your help, also what is the widest tyre i can fit to a 7x16 wheel, ive got 235x70x16 on them at the moment,

Have you considered the option of a "looser" torque converter but keep the lock up clutch rather than all this mucking about with gear ratios and cams and use the cam you have?
Not quite sure where you are going with this engine/ transmission set up on a range rover
If you are going "comp sefari" on a capacity limit then quite alot of cam high flow heads low gearing and a loose ish torque converter on an auto.
Rock crawling long stroke short duration cam with hi ratio rockers (ie buckets of lift) small ports small valves long tube headers auto or manual as you will be using an extra reduction underdrive on the transfer box.
Device to terify the GTI boys and saxos on roundabouts then as you are going, big cam, big ports low gears loose converter, but not much fun off road as it'll pick up of idle like a sloath on valium unless you go manual.
If you want somthing that can do a bit of it all then keep the gearing you have and the auto box but go 3,9 cam or similar and either bigger capacity or forced induction.
I just think if you keep sticking bits you have together without an overall plan you will end up with tears.

its not going major off road, just want to make the hot-hatch brigade think, and to tow the trailer around now and again, ive got a spare engine with 9;75 pistons and a typhoon cam with some large valved heads that have been port matched, i havent got enough money to buy loads of parts for it, the escort is taking most of it, the engine in her at the moment has got oil leaks and water leaks so it needs doing, just want to use parts i have got already but also have some fun with her, the way is fast road,
