I have a 94 Disco-2 3.9 block, and new mains came with thrust bearing faces on both shells. Crank fitted but end float was close to zero, so I had to rub down thrust faces to get float correct.
Was that your problem?

Sorry to come in late. Just struck this myself - 94 Disco-2 3.9 block, thrust bearing came with thrust faces on upper and lower shell, but lower shell tang didnt match cap notch, so machine shop modified the cap just enough to fit bearing.
