Before the deck gets weak or before the pistons hit the head?

At this time I have a deck height clearance of 0.047 which is not very good for squish.
My idea is to machine the deck height of the block but don't know how much I can remove.

I would guess its ok to take 0.050 off the deck, Ive had a few machined so the engine number is missing as its been machined off,
Another way is offset grind the crank,

Dimitri,
I took 40thou off my 3.9 block but I had no choice as compression would have been far too low.
I have one concern in decking the block and that is that the holes for the head bolts or studs seem to end where the block cracking occurs and reducing the deck thickness could possibly make it worse especially on a later style block (4.0 4.6)
I also think Hamill made comment that he thought the later stretch type bolts were a contributing factor to the cracking.
If you have top hats and are using studs I would think you would be ok as the liners are being pushed down on to the the block as the heads are torqued down.
